What is Side by Side about?

If you like to sing and spend time with the elderly, then you may just have found the perfect match! This page is intended to answer some of the questions you might have about what it's like to be part of Side by Side. If what you are looking for isn't here, feel free to contact us.

How can I join?

Due to the nature of our service, we are limited in the number of volunteers we can rehearse and serve with. Consequently, Side by Side holds auditions every year in early October for new members. We pride ourselves in running the least intimidating auditions on campus; for us, an audition is as much for you to get to know us as for us to get to know you.

What kind of musical training do I need?

Not much experience is required - many of our members got their start in the shower - though the ability to read and sing music is important. Most importantly, we look for a love of the elderly and a dedication to service.

How much of a time commitment is Side by Side?

Membership in the group is a serious commitment that will take up to about five hours per week. During fall quarter, there are two two-hour to two-and-a-half-hour rehearsals during which we learn most of our year's repertoire. During Winter and Spring quarters, we rehearse only once a week and perform at a nursing home every Saturday or Sunday. While the time and dedication the group requires is substantial, the reward is immense.

What will I get out of Side by Side?

A lot! From belonging to a tight community of fellow service-minded individuals to spending time singing to and talking with nursing home residents, Side by Side offers its members an amazing opportunity to enjoy and appreciate life outside of the Stanford bubble. It is a unique opportunity to use talents that you normally would not associate with volunteer work in the community service realm. We all love music, working with the elderly, and just having a good time, and if you do too, then you will definitely get a lot out of this group as well.
